Limit reference
Discord file size limit
Aim for
20MB
As of , Discord's free-tier upload limit is 20MB, raised from 10MB in August 2026. Nitro Basic is 50MB and Nitro is 500MB.
If 20MB still gets rejected
The 20MB limit rolled out gradually and some accounts were still capped at 10MB. If Discord rejects a 20MB file, target 10MB.

By plan
Discord limits by tier
What the same file is allowed to be, depending on the plan you are on or the route you send it by. Only the default free path is ever offered as a preset — the rest are here so you can see whether changing route is cheaper than compressing.

Background
Why the limit bites, and what to do about it
- Compressing a video for DiscordDiscord's free limit went to 20MB, but the rollout was uneven and some accounts still see 10MB. Here is how to pick a target that actually uploads.
- Compressing a video for Microsoft TeamsTeams advertises 250GB per file and caps a chat attachment at 100MB. Different routes, different limits -- and the interface pushes you to the small one.
- H.264, H.265 and AV1 comparedAV1 beats H.265 which beats H.264 on efficiency. H.264 is still right for most files you hand to someone else, and the reason is compatibility.
